Meindert Warners Smidt
Meindert Warners Smidt was born on 10 March 1850 in the Krummhörn, the flat marsh country of East Frisia on the North Sea coast of Germany. He was the son of Warner Jakobs Smidt and Fenneke Meenen. His second name, Warners, means Warner's son.
On 7 August 1870, at twenty, he married Enke Janssen, the daughter of Jan Adams Janssen and his wife Renktje. The marriage was entered in the church book of Manslagt. The couple settled at Upleward, a village a few miles up the coast, and there their daughter Rentje was born on 17 March 1875. She was baptized at Upleward on 11 April. She carried her grandmother Renktje's name. A son, also called Meindert Warners Smidt, was born on 23 March 1886 and later married at Upleward.
In 1902 Boyd Pannkuk, a widower and early settler of Kossuth County, Iowa, came to East Frisia on a visit, met Rentje and took her back to Iowa as his wife. When she died at Titonka in 1962, her death certificate named her parents as Minort Smidt and Anne Johnson.
