Melvina Grider, whom every census taker called Lucinda, was born in Missouri about 1827 and died in Texas between 1870 and 1876, while her children were small. She survives chiefly as a name written on her son's death certificate sixty years later, spelled Melvina Gridy by whoever answered the undertaker.

She married twice. The Hopkins County household of 1860 holds two children under a different surname, CHARITY M. GATIS born in Arkansas in 1847 and DUNCAN GATIS born there in 1849, so she was a Mrs. Gatis in Arkansas in the middle 1840s and a widow before she was thirty. Philip Kiser took on both of them along with her.

Her own people are in that house too, or at least one of them is. A ROBERT GRIDER born in Missouri about 1839 was boarding with the family, a young man of twenty living under his own surname in his sister's or cousin's house, which is what a brother does when he follows a married sister to a new state.
