Mercer Pool Little

Mercer Pool Little was born in New Brunswick, Canada, on 15 May 1858. Her parents were John Little and Catherine McNeil. In the 1861 census of New Brunswick she was a child of about three at Richibucto, in Kent County. The family was Presbyterian and gave its origin as Scotland.

She had at least four brothers and sisters. Charles R. was the eldest, born about 1848. J. Annie, later Mrs. Porter, was born in 1854. Radcliffe was born on 6 October 1865 at Cambridge, Massachusetts, which places the family in New England for a time in the 1860s. Arthur Edward was born back at Richibucto on 3 October 1872. Her brothers died far apart, at Medical Lake and Seattle in Washington and at Princeton, Illinois. Annie died at Moncton, New Brunswick.

On 24 January 1886, at Indianapolis, Indiana, she married William Douglas Evans, a New Yorker of Welsh parentage. They settled in Chicago. Their daughter Josephine Sherman was born there on 27 January 1888. At least nine more children followed over the next twelve years: Esther, Humphrey Marshall, Dorothy, George, Agnes, Meredith, Mercer, Elizabeth and William Douglas Jr. One daughter was named Mercer after her. Her son William Douglas Jr. died in Chicago in July 1920, aged twenty.

By 1930 she and her husband had moved to Queens, New York, with three of their daughters. Her daughter Josephine was married to Osbert Croome Roach. Josephine's own daughter, born in 1922, was named Mercer Radcliffe Roach. The first name was her grandmother's, and the second was probably taken from Radcliffe Little, her grandmother's brother.

Her husband died in Manhattan on 15 January 1935. She died in Queens on 20 November 1943 and was buried at Chappaqua, New York, three days later. Her daughter Josephine was buried beside her in 1949.
