Morton L. Dwyer
Morton L. Dwyer was born on 26 December 1892 in Butler County, Kentucky, the county just south of Muhlenberg across the Mud River. His parents were Palace L. Dwyer (1862-1935) and Telitha Leigh Dwyer (1855-1934). His brother was Raymond Hezekiah Dwyer (1895-1988), born in Butler County in 1895.
The family moved north into Muhlenberg County, to a farm in the Leigh community near Greenville, which shares its name with his mother's family. In 1913 the county's first history noted that an old buffalo trail ran toward Greenville across his father's land. In the autumn of 1917 his brother Raymond left Greenville by special train for Camp Taylor at Louisville with the county's draft men.
He married Clara Carver. They had four sons: James Dwyer (1915-1999), Rayburn Jack Dwyer (1918-1981), Charles Dewey Dwyer Sr. (1920-2003), and Harold Edwin Dwyer (1922-2002). They also had a daughter, who married J. Stanley Miller and lived at Maryville, Tennessee.
Morton was a farmer. For more than fifty years he was also a substitute rural mail carrier for the Greenville Post Office, taking the mail out along the country routes when the regular carrier could not. He belonged to the Beech Creek Masonic Lodge, No. 918, of the Free and Accepted Masons.
His father died at home in the Leigh community in December 1935, and Morton and Raymond were named as his only survivors.
Morton died at 8:10 on the morning of Wednesday, 25 June 1969, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital, aged 76. He was then living on Route 2, Greenville. His funeral was held at Gary Funeral Home at one o'clock on Friday afternoon, and he was buried in Leigh's Family Cemetery, now the Leigh-Dwyer Family Cemetery at Greenville. He left his wife Clara, five children, fifteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and his brother Raymond, then of Harrison, Arkansas.
Clara outlived him by fourteen years and was buried beside him. Their stone carries the words GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN above the family name.
