Moses Kepplinger
Moses Keplinger was born in Virginia on 7 September 1821. His parents were Jonathan and Margaret Keplinger. A memorial gives his mother's maiden name as Siever.
On 28 January 1847 he married Susanah Lantz in Hardy County. He was 25 and she was 18. The minister Benjamin Stickley sent the county clerk a single sheet listing every couple he had married over the past year, and "Moses R. Keplinger and Susanah Lantz" are on it. Moses farmed near Maysville, in the part of Hardy County that became Grant County in 1866.
They had seven children: Mary Ann (1847), Martin (1849), Jonathan Matthew (1852), Wilson (1855), Anna (1858), Sarah (1861) and Mahala (1863). Consumption, the old name for tuberculosis, took Sarah in 1879, Mahala in 1884, Wilson in 1885 and Jonathan in 1891.
Moses died at Maysville on 26 January 1892 of blood poisoning, aged 70 years, 4 months and 19 days. His wife Susan gave the particulars to the assessor. Three months later, on 27 April 1892, their son Martin died at Maysville of consumption, aged 42. Moses is buried at Mount Hebron Cemetery, Maysville. A portrait of Moses and Susan survives, seated side by side before a painted backdrop.
