Nancy Starner

1818-1872 · Ohio
Born 1818, Ohio
Died 1872
Children include William

Nancy Starner was born in Ohio in 1818. She married John D. Askins of Knox County, Ohio, two years her junior, in Effingham County, Illinois, on 15 June 1841. Their son William was born in Hilliar Township, Knox County, Ohio, on 3 August 1846. The family moved on to Effingham County, Illinois, where her daughter Sarah Lovina and her son Jonathan Nelson were born.

John died in the middle 1850s, leaving her with three young children. On 28 January 1856, in Effingham County, she married George Clark Eccles, a widower born on 13 May 1803 at Stretford, outside Manchester, the son of Thomas and Sarah Eccles. He had married Mary Whittingham at Manchester in 1826 and had five children by her. Nancy and George had one son, who died as a baby. In 1860 the census found the household in Township 9 North, Range 4 East: George C. Eckles, 58, of Manchester, England; Nancy, 42, born Ohio; Wm Askins, 14; Lavina Askins, 12; Jonathan Askins, 10; and Isabell Stamer, 2. The little girl's surname is most probably a misreading of Starner, a child of Nancy's own family.

Nancy died in 1872 and was buried in Agney Cemetery, under a stone that names her as the wife of John Askins. George married a third time in 1878 and died in 1888. He lies at the Bob Doan burying ground in Loudon Township, Fayette County. In 1916 Ada H. Kepley described the place in the Beecher City Journal. The Hard Shell Baptist church that once stood there was gone, she wrote, and of the Baptists buried there, "on their tombstones they wrote their faith and doctrine." In her copy the stone of George Eccles reads: "George Eccles Ages 85 Died 1888 Let others after earth aspires Christ is the treasure I desire And through the world account me more Yet having Christ, I want no more."

The Effingham County history of 1883 lists the early settlers of Liberty Township, the Beecher City country where she lived. From Ohio, it says, came Thomas Dutton and "a man named Starner. The latter was a German, and died in the township." George Eccles came to the same township in 1841. Whether that Starner was Nancy's father is not known.
