Nathan Schofield
Nathan Schofield was born on 30 March 1764 at Black River, by his family's memorials. On 3 January 1793, at White Rock, he married Hannah Ward. She was eighteen, a daughter of William and Elizabeth Ward of Beech Hill, a Yorkshire family that had come out to Nova Scotia in 1774.
The Horton town book, as Arthur Eaton printed it in his History of Kings County in 1910, gives the couple thirteen children: "Nathan Schofield m. Hannah Ward. Children: Ann, b. March 30, 1796; John, b. Dec. 17, 1798; Aaron, b. Jan. 3, 1799; Olive, b. March 30, 1800; Elisha, b. July 17, 1802; William, b. Oct. 15, 1804; Pheby, b. Jan. 12, 1807; Sarah, b. March 19, 1809; Rebecca, b. April 4, 1811; Mary, b. Jan. 1, 1813; Hannah Susan, b. April 27, 1815; Elijah, b. Jan. 5, 1817; William, b. April 30, 1816." The dates are as printed. Some cannot all be right, since John and Aaron stand only three weeks apart, which is the mark of a family entered in one sitting long after the births.
Their daughter Olive, born on 30 March 1800, became the second wife of Jacob Britain Dodge, whose first wife had been Hannah's younger sister Susannah. In the 1840s Olive went west with the Dodges to Iowa County, Wisconsin.
Hannah died at Horton on 9 December 1850. Nathan outlived her by five years and died on 12 January 1856, in his ninety-second year. No trade, land or church of his is recorded in these sources.
