Nathaniel Woodward
Nathaniel Woodward first appears in Boston as a servant of William Coddington. He was admitted to the Boston church on 8 December 1633 and made a freeman on 17 April 1637. He was born by about 1615.
He was a carpenter. In 1639 he received a Boston lot at Muddy River, the farming district that later became Brookline. He married Mary Jackson, who had been baptised at Boston in Lincolnshire in 1618. She joined the Boston church on 23 January 1640/1 as "the wife of our brother Nathaniell Woodward".
A child was born to them by 1642. Elisha was baptised at Boston on 21 April 1644 and Nathaniel on 12 April 1646. Israel and John followed, John about 1650.
In 1648 the family moved to Taunton, in the Plymouth Colony. They went back to Boston in 1655 and were at Taunton again by 1664. Between 1650 and 1653 he sat on coroner's juries at Plymouth. By 1664 he had a second wife, Katherine. Mary is thought to have died by 1655.
His son Elisha was killed in King Philip's War in 1675. That November his son John married Sarah Crossman of Taunton.
On 14 September 1686 he deeded twenty acres to his son James. He was dead by 1 February 1694/5.
His father was very probably Nathaniel Woodward of Boston, who died in 1675. Robert Charles Anderson, in The Great Migration Begins, calls the relationship "almost certainly correct" but says it "deserves careful study".
