Nicholas Riehm was a son of Johann Eberhard Riehm, the Palatine settler of 1717 on the Muddy Creek in Cocalico Township, Lancaster County. He grew up on his father's land near the place his brother Tobias later laid out as Reamstown. In 1749 he and his brother John Eberhard were counted among the people of the Muddy Creek who were attached to the Moravian Brethren, although their father had turned against them the year before. Beside his name on that list stands that of a Sarah Elizabeth Riehm, probably his wife.

Two of his sons married within four months of each other. On 14 September 1767 Abraham, son of Nicholas Riehm, married Elizabeth, daughter of Adam Neidig, both single. On 18 January 1768 his son John married Anna Maria Kramer.

His first wife was dead by 1769. On 15 August that year the Reformed pastor John Waldschmidt married Nicolaus Riehm, widower, to Anna Catharina, widow of Heinrich Hartmann. He died before the end of 1778, very probably in 1774, the year a family genealogy gives. On 22 November 1778 Waldschmidt married Catharina, wife of the late Nicolaus Ruhm, to Jacob Dritsch, a widower.
