Nicholas Wilhelm Ruppert was born on 28 September 1836 in Germany, in Saxony by the censuses, the son of a John Ruppert. He and Anna Marie Grauer, a Württemberg woman, were farming at Nokomis by 1870, and the household grew around them: Lena, John, Peter, Barbara, Jacob, Christina, William and later Edward.

An older Saxon-born John Ruppert lived under their roof through the censuses of 1870 and 1880, forty and then fifty-two. He died at Nokomis on 28 March 1887, aged fifty-nine, and the county return names him Johann S. Ruppert. Born about 1828, he was eight years older than Nicholas: a brother or a cousin, not the father named on Nicholas's death certificate.

He died a retired farmer at Nokomis on 27 November 1917, four months after his wife's brother Conrad, whose obituary had named her as Mrs. Nicholas Ruppert. He is buried at Saint Paul's Cemetery, the German Lutheran burying ground at Nokomis, under one stone with Anna Marie.
