Ockje Evers Meyer

Ockje Evers Meyer was born on 24 July 1831 at Loquard in the Krummhörn, the marsh country of East Frisia on the North Sea coast. Her father was Evert Janssen Meyer and her mother was Taetje Thamsen. Her second name, Evers, means Evert's, from her father's given name. In America she was called Edith.

On 29 August 1857 she married Anton Pantekoek, also of Loquard, in the church at Campen. Two months later, on 26 October 1857, she gave birth to their first son, Boye Siebrands Boyen, called Boyd. Berend Anton Boyen, called Ben, followed in 1860, and Ewerdina in 1863. Ewerdina died at two, in 1865.

By then the family was in America. They had crossed in 1864 and settled at Forreston, Illinois, where Evert, Alice and John were born. In 1871 they moved to Grundy County, Iowa, and in 1882 to unimproved land in German Township, Kossuth County. Ockje bore nine children over twenty-two years, the last, Effie, in 1879. Her son Evert died in 1894, at twenty-eight.

In 1905 she and Anton retired to Titonka. Anton died there in 1911. Ockje died on 27 June 1914, aged eighty-two, and is buried beside him at the Ramsey Reformed Church Cemetery.
