Ola Dowdy
Ola Cannon was born on 4 October 1893 at Ranger, Yell County, Arkansas, the daughter of W. N. Cannon, called Billy, and Roena King. Her father died in 1900, when she was six, and the census of that June found her mother a widow of 35 with four children in Magazine Township: Benjamin, Ardena, Ola and little William. Her mother died in 1914.
On 13 November 1910, at eighteen, she married W. A. Dowdy of Ranger, a farmer's son four years older. Two years later they moved to Cherokee County, Oklahoma, where her only child, William Ralph, was born at Tahlequah on 17 November 1913, and in December 1913 to Holdenville. In March 1921 her husband applied for a passport to take the family to the state of Vera Cruz in Mexico, "for the purpose of making my future home", and described her in his affidavit: born Yell County 4 October 1893, five feet six and a half, about 140 pounds, "color of hair, red or auburn; color of eyes, brown." The photograph in the file shows her with her hair drawn back, beside her husband, with Ralph behind them. In January 1942, applying for a Social Security number, she gave her parents' names as Billy Cannon and Roena King.
The Dowdys were back in Holdenville by 1930 and were still there in April 1950. On 28 April 1950 a tornado destroyed their home and killed them both. Ola was 56. They were buried together in the Holdenville Cemetery on 1 May 1950, under a red granite stone with Ola Cannon on the left and William Alfred on the right and the same April day cut under each name.
