Ora Ethel Beverly
Ora Ethel Beverly was born on 6 June 1887 at Fort Worth, Texas. She was the daughter of John Allen Beverly, a Texas cattleman who had ridden the trail drives to Dodge City, and his first wife Julia. Her father later managed a ranch near Watrous, New Mexico, and her mother died there in 1900 and was buried on the Phoenix Ranch. Ora had three older brothers: Wade Allen, Leonidas Dow, called Lon, and James T. Beverly.
She went by Ethel. She married Ernest Gaylord Charter, known as Kid, a cowboy twelve years older than she was. Their first child, Theodore Travis, was born in 1904, when she was seventeen. Six more followed: Robert, Tempest Isabelle, Viola Elizabeth, Earnest George, Mamie Alfreda and, in 1921, Gayle Lloyd.
The family homesteaded in Dewey County, Oklahoma, and was there in 1920. By 1930 they were in Woodward County, the next county north, where the census gives her as O. Ethel Charter. By 1940 they had moved to Rawlins, Wyoming.
When her father died at Pampa, Texas, in January 1956, at ninety eight, his obituary listed among his survivors "Mrs. Ethel Charter, Rawlings, Wyo." Kid Charter died three years later. Ethel lived on at Rawlins until 7 April 1976, when she died at eighty eight. She is buried in the Rawlins Cemetery beside her husband, under a plain stone that reads O. ETHEL CHARTER.
