Peggy Spafford
Peggy Spafford was born at Rowley, Massachusetts, on 30 June 1735, the fourth child of Capt. John Spafford and Hannah Tyler. When she was about nine her father built the first saw-mill and corn-mill at No. 4, the frontier settlement on the Connecticut River that became Charlestown, New Hampshire. In April 1746, when she was ten, raiders burned the mills and carried her father off to Canada. He came back and built them again.
On 6 November 1751 she married Benjamin Allen, a soldier of the No. 4 garrison. Saunderson's History of Charlestown places the wedding at Rowley and says she was "sweet 16". She had ten children over twenty-five years, from Eunice in 1754 to Fanny in 1779.
In April 1757 her brother Asa was taken prisoner at Charlestown by French and Indians. He was exchanged, and died of smallpox at Quebec on his way home. Her fourth child, born in 1762, was named Asa Spafford Allen.
Her daughter Prudence, born on 14 May 1769, married Isaac Farwell, and her daughter Abigail married his brother Jesse.
