Permelia Johnson
Permelia Johnson was born on 4 December 1814, by her gravestone, and in Tennessee, by the 1850 census. She married John S. Aud in White County, Illinois, on 1 May 1833, when she was eighteen. The clerk wrote her name Parmelia.
They farmed in White County. Their son John M. Aud was born on 22 August 1839, and their daughter Margaret Ellen on 13 April 1843. John M. died on 6 November 1848, aged nine. The 1850 census found her at thirty five keeping the house with John, seven-year-old Margaret and a young Henry L. Aud, born in Tennessee.
She died the next spring, on 4 May 1851, aged thirty six. She was buried beside her son in the Aud family plot at Moore Cemetery, White County. Her stone is carved with a hand, one finger pointing upward. Below her dates a verse is cut in her voice: "Weep not for me my husband dear, / I am not dead but sleeping here, / I am not yours but Christ's alone, / Who loved me best and took me home." Four months later John married again, to Nancy Jane Clark. Margaret was eight.
Her name came back twice. It survived on Margaret's remarriage licence of 1911, sixty years after her death, which names her mother as Permelia Johnson in full. And it survived in a granddaughter, Permelia May Hicks.
The plot she lies in also holds Caroline Johnson, the first wife of Thomas J. Aud, who died in 1839 at twenty two. Two Johnson women married two Aud men in the same township, and whether they were sisters is not known.
Her parents are not proved. A history of White County published in 1883 names a William and Elizabeth Johnson of White County, whose daughter Paulina married Lock Phipps in Herald's Prairie on 15 November 1832. That was six months before Permelia's own wedding in the same county. A family account posted in 2000 gives Permelia's parents as William and Elizabeth Johnson, with no source. The two may be the same couple, but no record says so.
