1814-1865 · Virginia
Born 1814, Augusta County, Virginia
Died 1865
Children include Elizabeth

Peter Adams Hanger was born about 1814 in Augusta County, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley. A memorial to him gives his birthplace as Fort Defiance and his parents as David Hanger and Sarah Crosby. His daughter Elizabeth's death certificate gives his birthplace simply as Virginia.

He married Elizabeth Carpenter, and for most of the 1840s they lived in Arkansas, where their first four children were born: Emeline about 1840, Mary about 1842, Sarah about 1844 and David about 1847. By 1848 they had come north into Missouri. In 1850 Peter, 36, was farming in Belleview Township, Washington County, with Elizabeth, 33, the four Arkansas-born children, Amanda, 2, and a girl of three months who was Elizabeth Frances. By 1860 they lived on Paint Rock Creek in Bowlin Township, Shannon County, close to the Current River and the Reynolds County line. That year Peter was 46 and Elizabeth 42, and a son Peter had just been born. Mary Jane later married a Moore, and Sarah A. married Marion Tinker. The children also included William H., born 1851.

When the Civil War came, southern Missouri was split between the two sides and raided by both. Peter, already in his late forties, served as a private in Company H of the 4th Missouri Cavalry, a Confederate regiment under Colonel Burbridge. He was certified disabled and discharged on 1 April 1863. A fifty-year-old man, he could no longer stand the daily fighting.

He did not live to see the peace. In February 1865 a band of Union soldiers came down from Pilot Knob, killed his neighbors and took him from his home. He was shot in the snow in Dixon Valley, south of present Ellington in Reynolds County, and his body was not found until April. The story of that day is told below.

His daughter Elizabeth Frances married William M. Moore in Carter County in 1871. When she died at Van Buren in 1913, the certificate named her parents as Pete Hanger of Virginia and Elisobeth Carpenter of Mississippi.
