Peter Arnout farmed at Goshen, in Orange County, New York. He was there by about 1734, when his son Peter was born. On 28 March 1760 that son enlisted in a New York provincial company raised around Goshen, and the muster roll gives his age as 26 and his birthplace as Goshen. Provincial companies were raised by the colony each year to serve beside the British regulars in the war with France. His daughter Hannah, born about 1740, was very probably born at Goshen as well.

He made his will on 30 March 1764 and it was proved on 10 June. It names his wife Lenah, five sons, Cornelius, Jacob, Peter, John and William, and "my 4 daughters, Mary, Deborah, Hannah and Lydia." It also names his son-in-law Gilbert Veale, Hannah's husband, and gives him the use of the house and the land within the fence for seven years.

The land went to the sons. Cornelius took Lot No. 5 in the West Division of Goshen with the dwelling house. Jacob, Peter, Cornelius and John shared Lot No. 6 with the barn. William got two acres of bog meadow with liberty to cut cedar rails. The daughters divided the proceeds of the movable estate once it was sold.

Lenah was provided for separately, with a room of the house and the goods she had brought with her. She was probably a late second wife. The mother of his nine children is not named in any known record.

His origin is unresolved. The family's own spelling settled to Arnot and later Arnett. They appear in no Dutch, French or Huguenot register in the region, and the Scottish reading sometimes given has no record behind it either. The name itself is the Dutch form of Arnold. The best remaining reading is an anglicized Dutch or Walloon family come up through Long Island, which is where Goshen's founders came from.
