Philip Chase
Philip Chase was born at Harwich on 24 July 1805, a son of Seth Chase and Susanna Long, who had married there in 1795. His brothers in the town book were Josiah, Jeremiah, Seth, Luther and Anthony, and he had a sister Percilla; three more, Varenus, Heman and Isaiah, died young.
In the autumn of 1826 he and Betsy Newcomb gave notice of their intention to marry, and they were married at Harwich on 19 November 1826. Over twenty-two years they had twelve children: Varanus (1827), Almira (1829, who lived five months), Phillip (1831), George H. (1833), Asa (1835), Eliza (1837), a first Daniel (1838, who lived six months), Charles (1840), Daniel Barnes (1843), Lydia (1845), Silas (1847) and Edwin (1849). The family lived at Harwich and later at Dennis, where Philip was counted in 1860 and 1870.
The sea took two of his sons. George was lost at sea on 13 January 1856, at twenty-two, and Edwin, the youngest, was also lost at sea.
Betsey died in December 1883. On 30 October 1884, at seventy-nine, Philip married again at Dennis. His bride was Susan (Crowell) Terry, a widow of fifty-five. He died at Carver, in Plymouth County, on 17 July 1890, a week before his eighty-fifth birthday, and was brought home to be buried at North Harwich. His stone gives his age as 84 years 11 months.
