Philip Kiser
Philip Kiser was born in North Carolina in November 1830 and was farming in Hopkins County, Texas, by 1860 with his Missouri-born wife Melvina, her two small Gatis children by an earlier marriage, and her kinsman Robert Grider boarding in the house.
He did not come to Texas alone. The enumerator who walked Beat 5 of Hopkins County that summer wrote down three Kiser households born in North Carolina within a few pages of each other: Henry, thirty-nine, with a Tennessee wife and a Tennessee-born daughter; Philip, thirty, with Melvina; and Moses W., thirty-two, with a Missouri wife. Three men of one generation and one birth state settling the same beat of the same county is a family moving together.
Melvina died in the early 1870s while the children were small. He married again, to an Elizabeth born in Arkansas about 1842 whose own mother Elizabeth Huff lived with them, and moved the family on to Coryell County, where his son Bob would marry in 1888. He was still there in 1900, seventy years old, with Elizabeth and a young daughter Lillie.
