Phoebe Hefflin married Harvey Merrifield and was keeping house in Marion County by 1850, when the census has her at twenty one with Harvey at twenty three, Sidney W. at two and Columbus Newton at some months old. An Elijah Satterfields, aged eleven, was living with them.
Five of her children's death returns name her, and no two clerks agreed on the spelling: Phoebe Hefflin on Allison E.'s and on Columbus Newton's, Phoebie Heflin on Sidney Waitman's and on Belle Eakle's, Phebie Heflin on Charles A.'s. Five households, five funerals, one woman.
Her husband was born in Marion County and was there in the censuses of 1850, 1860 and 1870.
Hefflin and Heflin are the same name, and it runs through Marion and Harrison counties.
She outlived him and settled his estate. Harvey died in 1886 and the Marion County probate books enter Phebe J. Merrifield as administratrix, with the appraisement taken at their house in the Paw Paw District on 20 November.
Her middle initial comes off the deeds she signed with him, in 1875, 1876 and 1878, each naming Harvey Merrifield and Phebe J. Merrifield his wife. A married woman signs a deed because she has to release her dower to make the sale good, which is why those books hold her name at all.
She died a widow on 28 April 1910 in Marion County, aged seventy seven, and her death register gives her birthplace as Barnesville.
