Polly Reed was born on 14 March 1807, in Ohio by the 1850 census. She married Randolph Mahoney in Fairfield County, Ohio, on 18 December 1823, when she was sixteen. The county's marriage record is the one that gives her maiden name.

Their son John B. was born in Fairfield County in December 1828. In 1835 the family moved to Shelby County, Illinois, and settled in what became Okaw township, where her husband preached Methodism from house to house. Their daughter Henrietta was born at Windsor about 1840.

Her Ohio birth is the middle stage of the family's move west. Her husband was a Marylander and her daughter an Illinoisan, which makes her the one member of the 1850 household born on the road rather than at either end of it.

Randolph died in June 1875. Polly died in Okaw township on 23 August 1881, aged seventy-four, and is buried beside him in the Mahoney Cemetery. Her stone names her as the wife of Randolph Mahoney.
