Preston Odway Hudson
Preston Odway Hudson was born on 5 June 1912 in Forsyth County, North Carolina, the fourth of the five children of Cager Lee Hudson and Della Mae Ratledge, who had both come down from Franklin County, Virginia. His mother died when he was fourteen and his father when he was eighteen. He married Nellie Elizabeth Beasley, a Rockingham County girl six years younger, and the 1940 census found the young couple across the state line in the Mayo River district of Patrick County, Virginia, with their first four children, Elizabeth, Milton, Lily and Irvin.
They came back to Forsyth County and raised eleven children on Route 1 at Clemmons: Milton, Ervin, David and Herbert Sherman, and Geraldine, Virginia, Joann, Lillie, Wilma Sarah, Cathy and one more daughter. In August 1966 he gave his consent as the father of the bride when Wilma, sixteen, married Raymond Odell Stilley at Center Grove Baptist Church, and over the years he signed for the weddings of Virginia, Geraldine, Joann, Cathy, David and Herbert as well. He died at Winston-Salem on 19 September 1989, aged seventy-seven, and was buried at Gospel Light Baptist Church at Walkertown, where Nellie joined him in 1998 under a grey double stone cut HUDSON with two open books.
