Prosper P. Davis

Prosper P. Davis of the Sullivan County side of the Delaware bought part of the Gore lot of Great Lot One of the Hardenburgh Patent, in the town of Bethel, from Stephen W. Royce and Cordelia his wife on 15 December 1859 for fifty dollars, and mortgaged it the next day. He already held land there: a deed of the previous year describes a neighbouring parcel as bounded south by the lands of Prosper P. Davis and Philip P. Fulton. His name runs through the Sullivan County mortgage indexes into 1866.

He enlisted at Tusten on 15 August 1862, aged forty five by the roster, the legal ceiling for enlistment. The 1855 and 1860 censuses both put his birth about 1810, and his memorials carry 1803. He served as a private in Company G of the 143rd New York, the Sullivan County regiment, and was discharged for disability in February 1863.

Widowed and remarried, he moved across the county line to Rio in Deerpark, Orange County. There everything went. In September 1883 two Middletown men recovered a judgment against him in a justice's court, a receiver was appointed over his property within a fortnight, and in April 1885 the receiver sold off even the judgments Davis himself held against other men. He was admitted to the Orange County poor house on 2 May 1887, a labourer, common school education, temperate. A year later, on 21 May 1888, his daughter signed him into the New York Soldiers' and Sailors' Home at Bath. He died there of old age nineteen days after that.
