Ralph Gorham
Ralph Gorham is named as the father of the John Gorham baptized at Benefield in Northamptonshire on 28 January 1621, later Capt. John Gorham of Yarmouth. The register entry is quoted in compiled Gorham genealogies as "John Gorram son of Ralph Gorram." A typescript Gorham genealogy says Ralph married Margaret Stephenson at Oundle, near Benefield, on 22 May 1610. The same work gives his birth as 1575 and his parents as James Gorham and Agnes Berrington of Benefield. None of these English dates has been checked against the registers.
A Ralph Gorham was at Plymouth by 1637. That year the colony granted him land "to erect a house vpon and a garden place" out of the waste ground near the houses of Edmond Bumpas and Philip Delano. In March 1639 the grand inquest presented "Raph Goarame, thelder, ... for breakeing the Kinges peace in beateing of Webb Adey." In June he was fined ten shillings for it. Calling him "the elder" implies a younger Ralph in the colony, probably a son.
Webb Adey, the man he beat, was well known to the court. In 1638 Adey had been put in the stocks for working in his garden on two Sabbaths in a row and for "disorderly liueinge in idlenesse & nastynes," and he was later whipped at the post for the same offence.
In 1642 the court ordered Mr. Jenney to allow Ralph ten bushels of Indian corn. The same day Ralph claimed a debt of three pounds, four shillings and sixpence from Mr. John Combe. Combe admitted it. Ralph agreed to lend him four or five bushels of wheat to sow his ground that spring, and the court made the crop security for both the debt and the seed.
No Plymouth record calls Capt. John Gorham Ralph's son. The tie rests on the Benefield baptism and on Ralph's presence at Plymouth when John was there. The genealogy says Ralph died about 1643 and left no widow. No grave or probate for him is known.
