Ralph Tough
Ralph Tough was a son of Thomas Tough of Rothley and Mountsorrel in Leicestershire and his wife Susan. His father died in 1586, when Ralph was still under age, and his mother in 1592. The next year, 1593, his name appears in the Rothley manor court rolls for the first time. His elder brother Thomas died in 1619. His sisters were Jeane and Margaret.
He lived afterwards at Burrough-on-the-Hill, near Melton Mowbray, and was probably the Ralph Tough who served as churchwarden there in 1612.
His daughter Frances was probably born at Burrough about 1595 to 1597. The parish registers there begin only in 1612. She went to London as a young woman, and on 26 November 1617 she married Sampson Chester, a merchant tailor from Leicestershire, at St Anne's Blackfriars. She married second Thomas Smith and third Edward Stebbins, and died at Hartford in Connecticut in 1673. A Joane Tough who married Thomas Hoye at Burrough in 1632 may also have been Ralph's daughter.
