Rebecca Chapman was born in England, a sister of Capt. Robert Chapman of Saybrook, Connecticut, by the 1945 Bushnell genealogy. About 1643 she married William Bushnell at Saybrook. He was a carpenter, later ensign and lieutenant of the town's train band.

She bore eleven children between 1644 and about 1661: Joshua, Samuel, Rebecca, Francis, the twins Stephen and Thomas, Judith, William, Abigail, Lydia and Daniel. Her son Francis went to Norwalk and then helped settle Danbury. Three of her daughters married Sewards of Guilford and Durham.

Her brother Robert stood beside her husband in the town's affairs. Both signed Saybrook's agreement with the Mohegans in 1665. In 1710 Robert Chapman was one of the two men appointed to value the 1500 acres that Uncas had left her husband. The Bushnell genealogy, describing her son Thomas's estate in 1713, speaks of "the family of Lt. William Bushnell and Rebecca (Chapman) Bushnell." She died at Saybrook. The date is not given.
