Rebecca Jackson

Rebecca Jackson was born in Nova Scotia about 1819 and married Wilson Dodge, who was born there too, into the Planter-descended Dodge clan of Kings County. The whole connection came west together, and she kept house at Ridgeway in Iowa County, Wisconsin, for at least thirty years.

Four censuses hold her and none of them agrees on her age. She is entered born 1821 in 1850, 1817 in 1860, 1820 in 1870 and 1818 in 1880, which is the ordinary drift of a woman who was never asked twice by the same man and probably did not have a written date herself.

Her surname comes from a memorial rather than a record. In 1850 the Dodges and the Jacksons are on one census page at Ridgeway. Wilson and Rebecca had their own household, and the elder John Dodge and Elizabeth lived next door. Her brother Elisha Jackson was boarding in the old people's house rather than in his sister's. Her sister Eunice Grant, born in Nova Scotia, lived in her household in 1860, 1870 and 1880.

Her parents may be Stephen Jackson and his wife Eunice. The Nova Scotia church records hold a Eunice Harriet Jackson, born 30 November 1810, daughter of Stephen and Eunice, and the 1880 census of Ridgeway puts the birth of the sister in Rebecca's house in exactly 1810. If they are the same woman, Stephen and Eunice are Rebecca's parents as well. No known record ties the two Eunices together, and no marriage of a Eunice Jackson to a Grant is known.
