Rebecca Davenport

Rebecca Monroe kept a farming household at Prairie Township, in Lincoln County, Missouri, on the rolling ground west of the river above St. Louis. There were six children, named with their birth dates in the widow's pension declarations: David Anthony in 1850, James Thomas in 1852, Sarah Frances in 1855, Abraham in 1857, Cynthia Ann in 1859 and John Henderson in 1862.

In 1870 she is the head of that household, with no husband enumerated in it and six children still at home, the youngest seven. Her husband had been killed by bushwhackers near Rocheport in September 1864, and she was drawing a widow's pension for him.

The children stayed put and married in the county, and the courthouse books catch them one after another: Abraham to Melissa Womble, James T. to Margaret J. Hancock, John H. to Margaret E. Presley. Fifty years on, the 1910 census finds John H. at Hawk Point with his wife Margaret E. and his older brother James T. under the same roof.
