Rebecca Morgan was born in Louisiana about 1835. She married William L. Robertson, and their children were born over more than twenty years, from about 1854 to 1876. Several of them gave their birthplace as Independence, then on the border of Livingston and St. Helena Parishes in the Florida Parishes of Louisiana, the country north of Lake Pontchartrain that was Spanish West Florida until 1810.
In 1880 she was 45 and keeping house in the 3rd Ward of St. Helena Parish. Seven of her children were still at home: Howel, Walker, Tommie, Virginia, Evan, Edward and the youngest, Arch, who was four.
Her sons remembered her maiden name. Between 1923 and 1960 the death certificates of six of them, in Louisiana and Texas, each give their mother as Rebecca Morgan. Her youngest son Arch lived until 1960 and is buried at Hillsdale in St. Helena Parish.
In August 1862 a William L. Robertson, almost certainly her husband, enlisted at Ponchatoula in the 9th Battalion, Louisiana Infantry. He was paroled at Port Hudson in July 1863, after the garrison there surrendered at the end of a forty-eight-day siege. Rebecca was keeping house near Independence with at least three small sons, and another, David Turner, was born about 1863.
