Richard Lord
Richard Lord was born about 1555, perhaps of a Lord family of Yelvertoft in Northamptonshire. He settled at Towcester, a market town a few miles south west of Northampton. He called himself a husbandman, a farmer who worked his own or rented land, a rank below the yeoman. He married a woman named Joan. They had four children, Elizabeth about 1583, Thomas about 1585, Ellen about 1587 and Alice about 1590.
He made his will on 30 May 1610. "In the name of God Amen. 30th Daye of Maye in the Yeare of our Lord God 1610. I Richard Lorde of Towcester in Co of Northton, husbandman of whole mynde doe make this my last will and testament. My soull vnto Allmighty God and my bodie to be buried in the Churchyard of Towcester." He gave 12 pence to the repair of Towcester church.
To his daughter Elizabeth he left £10. Ellen was to have £30, half on her wedding day and half within twelve months after it. Then came a condition: "yf it shall happen that she shall marry with one Robert Marriot of Calcot yeom then my will is that the saide sume of xxx li. be made vpp xl li." Alice was to have £30.
Joan was to have half the moveable goods, "the chamber over the kitchen where she and I due lodge", "third pt of the apples & onle which shall growe yearely in the orchard", and £5 a year while she remained his widow. Everything else went to the son: "To Thomas my sonne and to his heires and assignes for ever all my Lands tenements & hereditaments whatsoever in Towcester." Thomas was sole executor.
He asked three men to supervise it. They were Mr. Henry Pedder and Thomas Pedder of East Purye, gentlemen, and Paul Boughton of the same town, clerk. Each had 2s 6d "for their paynes to be taken". Thomas Pedder, Paul Boughton and Richard Abbot witnessed it, and he signed "Ric. Lord".
Joan never had her widow's chamber. She was buried at Towcester on 22 September 1610, and Richard followed on 16 October. The will was proved on 7 February 1610/11. Paul Boughton wrote out the inventory of his goods, which came to £90 16s 2d.
Thirteen days after probate, on 20 February 1610/11, his son Thomas took out a licence to marry Dorothy Bird, and they married at Towcester on 23 February. Alice married Richard Morris on 20 May 1611. In 1635 Thomas took his wife and children to New England, and he was one of the first proprietors of Hartford in Connecticut.
