Richard Porter settled at Weymouth, Massachusetts, by 1635. He had grants of land there in 1648, 1654, 1661, 1663 and 1668. For many years he served the town as selectman, constable and committee man. He was a member of the original church, where he was "brother Richard Porter."

His children were John; Ruth, born 3 October 1639, who married Thomas Bailey Jr. on 19 September 1660; Thomas, who married Sarah Vining; and Mary, who married John Bicknell on 2 January 1659. Ruth's birth is the only one of them recorded. His wife's name is not known.

He made his will on 25 December 1688. It was never entered in the Suffolk probate books. The will made his son John sole executor and residuary legatee. It left bequests to the grandson Thomas, only son of his son Thomas, who had died; to his daughter Mary Bicknell; to his grandchild Samuel Bayley; and to his grandchild Ruth Richards. His inventory was taken on 6 March 1689 and came to 80 pounds.
