Richard Scott Hammons
Richard Scott Hammons was born in 1870 in West Virginia, the son of John Hammons and Sarah Shaffer, both of them Webster County people. He went by Scott: every census taker from 1880 to 1930 wrote him down that way. His death certificate gives his birth as 16 November 1870 in Greenbrier County; the family's memorial gives 16 January 1870 in Webster County, and when he married he gave Webster County himself. In June 1880 he was a boy in his parents' house in Nicholas County with Jesse, Mary and James.
On 20 July 1894 Scott Hammond, 22, married Martha J. Stanley in Greenbrier County. She was fifteen. He had been born in Webster County and she in Wyoming County, and he was living in Greenbrier. W. R. Belcher performed the ceremony. Their children were Jesse James, born at Cordova in Greenbrier County on 13 May 1896; Silas, born in Greenbrier County on 12 November 1899; Howard Hanley, born 28 September 1902; Arvilla; Percilla Pearl, born in Webster County on 27 April 1908; and Orvil F., born 1912. The memorial also links a Jessie J., born 1890, four years before the marriage.
In June 1900 Scott and Martha J. Hammons were at Webster Springs in Webster County with the small boys Jesse and Silas. By 1910 they had moved to Falling Spring in Greenbrier County, and in 1920 they were still in Greenbrier County with Arvilla, Priscilla, Howard, Jessie, Silas and Arval at home. Martha died of tuberculosis at Cordova, in Falling Spring district, on 5 June 1927. Her death was registered under the name Martha Jane Cutlip (Hammons), and she was described as married.
On 15 November 1928 Scott married Mintie McMillion in Greenbrier County. She appears in later records as Rachel, and as Racheal Mintie Hammons at her death. In April 1930 the two of them were at Falling Spring with his youngest son Orval.
In his last months Scott moved to Camden on Gauley in Webster County, where his son Jess lived. He died there at two in the afternoon on 9 March 1946, of high blood pressure with heart and kidney disease, aged 75. Jess gave the details for the certificate, which names Scott a farmer and a widower of Martha Stanley Hammons. He was buried on 11 March 1946 in the Christian Cemetery at Cordova, near Leonard in Greenbrier County. His son Jesse James, who had married Leafy Bell Hardway in 1915, died at Webster Springs in 1965 and was buried at Blacks Chapel, Camden on Gauley; his daughter Percilla married Arnold Jarvis and lies there too. Howard married Tilsie Irene Stanley and is buried at Renick. Orvil ended his days at Fredericksburg, Virginia.
