Richard Swan of Rowley

Richard Swan of Rowley, in Essex County, Massachusetts. He made his will on 25 April 1678, being weak of body, but of perfect Memory & understanding, and it was proved at Ipswich a month later, on 23 May. The inventory taken the day before that came to 486 pounds 19 shillings and 9 pence, of which 352 pounds was land: the house and its privileges on the common, two hundred acres of village land, meadow and marsh at the east end of the town, eight acres at Symonds field and eight at the Rye plain.

He had one son and at least six daughters. The son, Robert, was of Haverhill and is called only son of Richard Swan of Rowley in the acquittance he signed on 20 May 1678. The daughters named in the will are Jane Wilson, Franciss Quilter, Dorothy Chapman and Mercy Warner, each left ten pounds, a daughter married to a Stickney who is named only through her three children, and Sarah, who had married Capt. Joseph Boynton in May 1669 and who with her husband got the residue of everything.

He married, on 1 March 1658 at Rowley, a widow named Ann Trumble, and the arrangement was set down in a contract before the wedding. That marriage came twelve years after Sarah was born, so the wife who survived him was not the mother of his children.
