Robert Burdick

Robert Burdick's English origin was never recorded and his life in the record starts at Newport, where Joseph Torrey baptized him on 19 November 1652 or 1653. He was made a freeman in the 1650s, and in November 1655 he married Ruth Hubbard, daughter of Samuel Hubbard and Tacy Cooper. Her father had walked out of four Massachusetts and Connecticut towns ahead of the magistrates and would go on to found the first Seventh Day Baptist church in America, and Robert married into the middle of that.

They went west to the Pawcatuck country, the strip between Rhode Island and Connecticut that Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts all claimed at once, and in 1661 that got him arrested.

After the prison he stayed on the land for another thirty years and became one of its officers. He was on the list of inhabitants of Westerly in May 1669, took the oath of allegiance in 1671 and again in 1679, and sat as a deputy to the Assembly in 1680, 1683 and 1685. In July 1675 he brought his family back to Newport for safety during King Philip's war and returned to Westerly when it was over. In May 1691 he and Ruth sold a hundred acres to John Macoone for ten pounds.

He died in 1692, before 25 October.
