Robert Crossman
Robert Crossman was born in England, a son of John Crossman, one of the first purchasers of Taunton in the Plymouth Colony. He was a drum-maker.
In 1652 he married Sarah Kingsbury at Dedham, a daughter of Joseph Kingsbury of that town. They made their home at Taunton. The town's register records eleven of their children, from John on 16 March 1654 to Susanna on 14 February 1672/3. A daughter Sarah, born in 1653, is not in the register but is given by a Crossman genealogy of 1961. Their son Eleazer died in 1667, a small child.
A Robert Crossman of Taunton was one of the owners of the town's saw mill on Mill River. In October 1666 William Witherell and two neighbours sued the owners for blocking the herring run up the river, and the court ordered them to open a passage.
He was one of the original purchasers of the Taunton North Purchase, the tract north of the town that became Easton, Mansfield and most of Norton. He died at Taunton about 1692. In 1749/50 his grandson Israel Woodward sold his rights in "the estate of his grandfather Robert Crossman".
His father, John Crossman, was expelled from Taunton for defending Quakers. He died at Newport, Rhode Island, in 1688, "aged about 100".
