Robert Myers
Robert Myers lived at Hovingham, a village in the North Riding of Yorkshire, near York. The parish clerk wrote the name Myres.
He is named as the father of Thomas Myers, LL.D., professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, by Thomas's grandson, the writer Frederic W. H. Myers. The Hovingham register agrees. It records the baptism of "Thos Myres", son of Robt, on 13 February 1775.
On 1 March 1774 Robert Myres of Hovingham married Ann Ellery at Hovingham. A marriage bond had been sworn on 27 February. A bond was a sworn undertaking given to the church authorities to obtain a licence to marry without having banns read. Robert and Ann had a daughter Ann baptized on 25 April 1777. An unnamed child of Robert and Ann was buried in 1781. A daughter Jane was baptized on 23 June 1784. An Isabel Myres of Hovingham, who married William Rowntree there on 18 May 1792, may have been another daughter.
Thomas's own birth year is in doubt. His monuments at Lewisham give 13 February 1773. The Hovingham entry has the same day and month, but in 1775. If 1775 is right, Thomas was Ann Ellery's son, born eleven months after the wedding. A Yorkshire marriage bond of 20 March 1772 names a Robert Myres and an Ann Ainsworth, and its parish is not given in the index. If 1773 is right, and that bond belongs to this Robert, then Thomas's mother was Ann Ainsworth. Which is true is not known.
Robert Myres was buried at Hovingham on 10 July 1807, aged 65. His son Thomas was by then a professor at Woolwich, married, with a young family.
