Robert Ransom

Salem parish
Children include Alice

Robert Ransom of Salem parish in Colchester, Connecticut. About 1708 he married Alice Newton, a daughter of Capt. James Newton. The town book carries their children from November 1709 to August 1732, eleven of them, and his daughter Alice is the sixth.

His wife's father was one of the proprietors of Colchester, signing on 28 April 1713, and Robert's name stands near his in the town's lists of officers. The Newton family history of 1911 lists him as "Robert Ransom of Colchester" and sets out his children by Alice in the same order and on the same dates as the town book.

Salem parish was the wild south end of Colchester, cut off as a parish of its own in 1725 and not made a town until 1819. The families on its lists are the same handful over and over: Harrises, Rathbuns, Dodges, Randalls, Treadways, Gateses, Morgans, and Ransoms. Its early settlers bought from a land company at a dollar an acre, many of them paying in wheat that had to be carted a hundred miles to Boston.

His parents are not known. Ransom is not among the origins the Colchester records give for the town's first planters, so the family arrived after the founding.
