Robert Royce
Robert Royce settled first at Stratford in Connecticut and then at New London, and died there in 1676. His widow Mary outlived him by twenty years and died at Wallingford, where two of her sons had gone. Their eldest, Sarah, was born about 1634, and Nehemiah about 1636. The name is written Rice as often as Royce in the seventeenth century records.
Where he came from in England is not known. Families of Ancient New Haven printed an English marriage for him in square brackets in 1931, from material the family supplied: Robert Royce to Mary Sims of Long Sutton, at Martock in Somerset, on 4 June 1634. No such entry is in the Martock register. The entry that does exist is at Long Sutton, ten years earlier: "Robert RAYSE, Mary SIMS," 4 June 1624. That Robert Rayse stayed in the parish and had Robert, Margret and Mary baptised there between 1625 and 1629. A Robert son of Robert Rayse had been baptised at Charlton Mackrell, three miles away, in 1598. None of this is the Robert Royce of New London.
An article in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register in 1968 called the Martock marriage "not a fact." The Mary and John series judged the Long Sutton couple an unlikely match, because the New London family's first child was born about 1634.
