Rose Penc
Rose Penc was born in Bohemia about 1897 and married Thomas Kral in Cook County, Illinois, on 11 April 1925. She bore seven children in fifteen years and raised them in one house at Brookfield, west of Chicago.
Her name is written down again and again, on the marriage licence and on the birth registrations of at least three of her children, always as the mother and always with her maiden name intact. When she arrived, when she died and where in Bohemia she came from are not known. The censuses of 1930 and 1940 put her birth about 1898 and her birthplace in Czechoslovakia, the country as it stood when the enumerator called rather than when she was born; the marriage licence says 1897.
The children were Frank in 1924, Rose in 1926, Elizabeth in 1928, Sylvia in 1929, Emily in 1931, Daniel about 1933 and Lydia in 1938. Six of the seven were still at home when the 1940 census was taken, and the family had been in the same house since at least 1935.
Her husband died in September 1954. The index of his death entered a Rose Kral Olney beside him, and that surname is not his and not hers, which suggests she married again as a widow. No record of a second marriage is known.
