Rose Rocca
Rose Rocca was born Maria Rosa Rocca on 28 June 1884 at Sant'Angelo a Fasanella, a hill town in the province of Salerno, south of Naples. Her father, Antonio Rocca, was a contadino of thirty-six. Her mother was Lucia Cappelli, a contadina. Antonio registered the birth at the town hall the next morning, 29 June, and the registrar wrote her name as Maria Rosa.
Her parents came to Brooklyn, and so did she. In New York she was Rose. She married Alessandro Copertino, called Alexander, who had been born the same year at Contrada in the province of Avellino. Their son Anthony was born in 1905, George in 1907, Philomena about 1911 and Alfred about 1915. Two other children, Lucy and Alfonso, died as infants.
The family's home was 138 New Jersey Avenue, in East New York, Brooklyn. Her mother, Lucia, died in Brooklyn in January 1927. Rose died on 30 May 1929, aged forty-four. A Brooklyn paper printed her name with the week's deaths in the borough: COPERTINO, ROSE, 46; 138 New Jersey ave. She was buried at St. John Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens.
Her daughter Philomena was eighteen when Rose died. Seven years later Philomena married Walter Suchocki from across the street.
