Rufus Harrison Brown was born on 15 May 1900 in Duenweg, Jasper County, Missouri. His parents were William Harrison Brown (1871-1938) and Artista Francis Clementine "Artie" Craig Brown (1875-1955). His brothers and sisters included Murrel Pringle Brown Ford, Carl Marsh Brown, Helen Florence Brown Lindsey, Clarence Elwood Brown, L Dean Brown and William B. "Bill" Brown.

He married Stella Mae Smith. Their children were Rowena Brown (1925-1988), Lee Roy Brown (1926-1991), Juanita Lou Brown Patton (1927-1989), Cleta Mae Brown Patton Farney (1928-2006), Mildred Ann Brown Saunders (1931-2010) and Gladys E. Brown Bohard (1934-2011).

Rufus died on 13 September 1956 in Barnsdall, Osage County, Oklahoma, aged 56. He is buried in Ethel Reece Cemetery at Barnsdall.

In 1920 he was nineteen and still at home at Duenweg, in the Jasper County lead and zinc field, with his parents William H. and Artie F. Brown. By 1930 he had moved to the Osage oil town of Barnsdall. The census that year lists Rufus, 29, Stella, 22, and the children Cleta Mae, Roena, Leroy, Juanita and Mary E. In 1940 the family was in the same house, with Mildred, Gladys and Earl added.

He and Stella share a red granite stone at Ethel Reece Cemetery headed BROWN, with MOTHER STELLA M. 1908 1964 on one side and FATHER RUFUS H. 1900 1956 on the other, and a line of faith carved below.
