Ruth Gaither was born on 8 September 1679 and baptized in All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, where the clerk wrote her as "Ruthe Gather." She was the eldest daughter of John Gaither of South River and his wife Ruth. Her father held Abington, at the head of South River, and bought up the neighbouring Freeman lands.

On 16 February 1696/7 she married John Warfield, the eldest son of Capt. Richard Warfield and Elinor Browne. She was seventeen. "In 1696, John married Ruth Gaither, oldest daughter of John Gaither, of South River," J. D. Warfield wrote in his 1905 history of the county's families. They lived on Warfield's Plains, near Indian Landing on the Severn.

Her children were Richard, born in 1697, John in 1700, Benjamin in 1702 and Alexander in 1704. Eleanor followed in 1705, Ruth in 1707 and Mary in 1709. The 1905 history adds Edward and Philip.

Her father died without a will in November 1702, and her mother administered his estate. Her brothers John and Benjamin signed his inventory as next of kin. In 1709/10 Ruth witnessed the will of a neighbour, Thomas Crutchley, alongside her husband and two of his brothers.

Her husband died in July 1718, also without a will. Her daughter Eleanor had been baptized that year, at thirteen, and she died in 1719. Her mother-in-law, Elinor Warfield, was buried in February 1719. On 5 June 1719 Ruth filed the account of her husband's personal estate, a little over £552. Twelve days later, on 17 June 1719, she married Daniel Carter. Her own mother was buried that October.

Her eldest son Richard inherited his father's land as heir-at-law and deeded it to his brothers. She was living on 9 January 1726/7 and died about 1728.
