Ruth Warfield

1754-1820 · Maryland
Born 1754, Anne Arundel County, Maryland
Died 1820
Children include Harriet

Ruth Warfield was the wife of Seth Warfield, a tobacco planter of Warfield's Forest, near Lisbon in upper Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Her memorial names her Ruth Hammond Welsh Warfield and gives her birth as 1754 in Anne Arundel County and her death as 1820, with burial at Warfield's Forest.

Her maiden name is in doubt. The biography on the same memorial calls her a daughter of Philip Warfield and Nancy Anne Purdy, and lists eleven Warfield brothers and sisters for her. J. D. Warfield, writing the family history in 1905, said that Seth and his four brothers "took for their wives a Welsh, three Dorseys and a Welling." That makes Welsh the better supported name. In 1918 a grandson of her daughter Harriet told an Illinois county history that Harriet had been "of Welsh descent." Hammond was probably a family middle name. Her daughters Ruth and Lydia both carried it, and so did her granddaughter Caroline Hammond Benepe.

Eight children are given for her. Mary was born about 1770, when Ruth was about sixteen, and John about 1772. Nancy Ann and Ruth Hammond followed in 1775, Ann about 1780 and Harriet Amelia in 1783. Seth came in 1789 and Lydia Hammond about 1795. Nancy Ann married a Lansdale. Ruth Hammond married a Dorsey and died in Ohio in 1844.

Her daughter Harriet married Dr. Jacob Benepe, a Swiss-born physician, on a Baltimore County licence of 26 November 1801, and later went west with him to Ohio. Harriet named her first daughter Ruthenett, born in 1803.

Seth died in 1812 and Ruth in 1820, by the memorials. An Anne Arundel County estate sale of about 1820 may have been hers. On the pages that list the buyers, Mrs. Ruth H. Dorsey, given as her daughter, bought blankets, a desk, bedsteads, a cradle, silver spoons and much of the household. Seth Warfield Jun, Humphrey Dorsey and Thomas Shipley bought there too. Nothing on those pages names whose estate it was.
