Born at Woodstock in Cherokee County, Georgia, on 18 June 1897, the son of Thomas Melvin McCollum and Rebecca Sargent. He appears there as a boy of twelve in the 1910 census, one of six children in his father's house: George W., Irene, himself, Effie, Essie and Bessie, with Thomas and Rebecca over them.

He married Janie Oneida Brookshire, born in 1900, and their children came in two long waves. Henry Thomas was born at Kennesaw on 1 February 1918, Harold Lee at Woodstock on 25 January 1920, Thomas Watson in Cherokee County on 29 March 1922, and Maudie Ree at Atlanta on 1 December 1927. Then, thirteen years after that, Roy Gene was born at Atlanta on 30 July 1940, when his eldest brother was twenty two.

By 1930 the family had left Cherokee County for Atlanta and were living in the household of Albert Brookshire, along with a dozen Brookshires of every age. When he filled out his draft registration in the war years he gave his residence as Atlanta and named Essie Brookshire as the person who would always know his address. His twin sisters Effie and Essie were born in 1900, and one of them had married Albert Brookshire: the draft card calls her Essie and the 1930 census calls her Effie.

He died on 12 April 1974 in DeKalb County, Georgia, and was buried at Woodstock, in the county he was born in and had left forty years before. His wife had gone two years ahead of him and lies in the same ground.
