Samuel Miles
Samuel Miles was born in South Carolina about 1803. The 1850 census gives his age and birthplace. His parents are not known. His family called him Uncle Sammy.
By 1828 he was in Franklin County, Tennessee, where his son William Asbury Miles was born that April. William was the second of four children of his first marriage, to a wife whose name the family remembered as Mary. A Samuel Miles headed a household in Franklin County in the 1830 census.
The family stayed in Tennessee until 1838. They then moved to Illinois, to the place where the town of Cairo now stands, and his wife died there. Samuel took his four children south to Mississippi on horseback. He settled in Itawamba County, where he appears in the censuses of 1840 and 1850. About 1842 he married a second wife, Margaret. In 1850 he was 47 and living in Itawamba County, with Margaret and five children at home. His eldest daughter, Angeline, married James Scott in the county. His son William enlisted in a Mississippi battalion for the Mexican War in December 1847 and left for Texas in January 1850.
Samuel Miles never bought a home of his own. The family said he simply liked to live in different places. He learned to read after he was grown, and in old age he read his Bible every day.
He followed his children to Texas. On 17 September 1869, in Harrison County, he married Martha Louisa Chittie, a widow with four children. The family says it was his third or fourth marriage. She died soon afterward. He was too old to support her children, so his daughter Angeline took two of them and his son John took the other two. In 1880 one of them, W. B. Chitty, was still living in John's household in Harrison County.
Samuel spent his last years with Angeline, by then Mrs. Russell, and her son William F. Scott in Harrison County. The date of his death is not known. A family genealogy of 1959 says he was buried in the Fort Crawford Cemetery at Hallsville. No stone for him survives there.
