Samuel Passmore
Samuel Passmore was born on 2 November 1844 in Georgia. His parents, Stephen Passmore and Elizabeth Cook, were both Georgians, and they moved the family to Alabama before 1849. In 1860 the census found them at Texasville in Barbour County, Alabama, in the southeast corner of the state. Sam was fifteen, and his brothers and sisters were Jesse, Edwin, Stephen, Elizabeth J., Mary J., Apsy J. and Alex.
In 1862, at seventeen, he enlisted in the Confederate army. He served as a private in Company H of the 39th Alabama Infantry and in Company A of the 45th Alabama Infantry. Both regiments were raised in the spring of 1862. He was later discharged in Alabama.
Early in 1866 he married Mary Jane Hagler in Barbour County. Their first son, James Marion, was born at Louisville in that county in December. Soon after the war the young family moved to San Augustine County in East Texas. In 1880 the census taker recorded Sam, 36, Mary J., 32, and six children at San Augustine.
By 1900 the Passmores had moved to Shelby County, next door, and Mary Jane told the census taker that she had borne eight children and all eight were living. The family settled in the Center Ridge community near Center, the county seat. Their children were James Marion, Willard A. "Eck," Stephen Thomas "Tom," Walter Jackson "Doss," Frances Eudora "Fannie," Emma Elizabeth, Lee Edward and Mary Ada.
Sam Passmore died at Center Ridge on 30 August 1915, aged 70. The Champion, the Center paper, printed his obituary on 8 September. He was survived by his wife and all eight children, every one of them married and living in the Center Ridge community. He was buried in Antioch Cemetery in San Augustine County under a stone carved "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." Two weeks later, on 16 September 1915, the State of Texas approved Mary Jane's application for a Confederate widow's pension.
