Samuel Swackhamer
1700-1782
Samuel Swackhamer, written Schwackhammer in the German, was born in 1700. He came to America in 1731. He settled in German Valley, in the hill country of northwest New Jersey, where he leased a tract of 600 acres. In 1895 that land made up the Cregar and Trimmer farms. The Livingston family owned it, and in 1795 Jacob Trimmer bought it from them, except for a part already sold to the Rev. Casper Wack.
He married three times. His will, dated 1 February 1780 and probated 8 March 1782, names his wife Elisabeth, a son-in-law Daniel Samis (or Lamis) and a brother-in-law Fred. Miller, and thirteen children. Among them were Conrad, born in 1720; John, born in 1727; Catherine, born in 1723, who married Christopher Carns; Ann, who married a Leeke; Dolly, who married Philip Terryberry; and Elisabeth, born in 1748, who married Jacob Dufford. His children were born across nearly thirty years.
He died on 3 February 1782, in his eighty-second year.
