Sarah A. Hale
Sarah A. Hale was born about 1834 in Tennessee. Her son Robert Alexander McGraw was born on 11 April 1860 at McMinnville, Warren County, Tennessee. His death certificate of 1938 names his parents as James McGraw and Sarah Hale. His memorial gives the same names and says James died of illness at Columbus, Kentucky, while a private in the Confederate army.
Sarah married again, to a farmer named Craven McGowin. In June 1880 the census taker found the household in Township 2, Range 8, beat 3, of Jackson County, Alabama, near Stevenson. Craven was 47 and Sarah was 46. Ten McGowin children lived with them, from Illinois, 24, down to Lubernie, 3. Last on the list was Alexander McGraw, 20, written as Craven's stepson, working on the farm. Everyone in the house had been born in Tennessee.
Which of the McGowin children were Sarah's own the census does not say. Two years later, in October 1882, her son married Emma Luona Shirley at Stevenson.
