Sarah Anderson
Sarah Anderson was born on 28 June 1792 in Georgia. The date is in the Stacy Collins family Bible. She was called Sary. Her parents are not known.
She married first a man named Gibson, who was killed a month after their wedding. About 1807 or 1808, in Georgia, she married Stacy Collins, a South Carolinian. They moved to Wayne County, Mississippi, by 1816 and then to Jones County. She bore fourteen children over thirty-one years, from Nancy in 1809 to Edwin in 1840. Her brother Asa, also called Jonathan, Anderson married Betsy Welch. Betsy was a sister of Cynthia Welch, whose daughter Eboline would marry Sarah's son Warren.
The 1850 census found her in Jones County, born in Georgia in 1792, with Stacy and their three youngest sons. In 1852, at about sixty, she went to Texas in an ox wagon with her husband and those sons, Newton, Warren and Edwin. About a year after they arrived, Stacy died of erysipelas and was buried on a pine hill near Honey Island.
The 1860 census found her in Hardin County, aged 67 by its reckoning, with Newton and Edwin. The war took her youngest son. Edwin died as a Confederate soldier on 5 January 1862. Three of her other sons, Newton, Warren and Stacy Jr., deserted and hid in the Big Thicket nearby. Two more, Simeon and Jasper, joined the deserters of Newton Knight's company back in Jones County.
She died on 17 July 1865, three months after the war ended. The date is from her memorial, whose contributor notes that the stone's date is doubtful.
