Sarah Barber
Sarah Barber, called Sally, was born on 13 August 1802 in North Carolina, according to a family Bible. She was "of the county" of Johnston when James Woodall gave bond to marry her on 10 August 1821. The bondsman was Plyer Barber, probably a near kinsman. She bore twelve children between about 1822 and 1847, among them Ryal Barber Woodall, who carried her surname as his middle name. Her husband's will of 1862 left her thirty acres "where I now live" for her widowhood. She was widowed in July 1865 and died in 1878.
Her father is not known. A genealogy published in 1959 appears to make her a daughter of "Plyer Barber who died in Johnston County in 1812". The Johnston County records of the Barber estates rule that out. In 1816 a committee divided the estate of Plyer Barber deceased into ten shares: Amy Barber, Reuben Barber, the heirs of Plyer Barber Jun. deceased, George Barber, Polly Messer, Owen Barber, Burwell Barber, Thomas Barber, Patsy Martin and Amy Jones. Sally, then fourteen, is not among them.
In February 1822 another committee laid off the land of a Plyer Barber deceased, probably the younger Plyer, among five heirs: Betsey, Polly, Dolly, Harry and Kimmons Barber. Sally is not among them either, though she had married only six months before. Her husband James Woodall sat on that committee, and so did Plyer Barber, her bondsman. A man whose wife was to take a share would hardly have been named to divide it. Her father was probably another Barber of the same family, perhaps one of the elder Plyer's sons.
